GeoTracing:Apps:GeoSkating

From GeoWiki

Lists more or less ordered ideas for concepts and features for the GeoSkating project. Since the more generic GeoTracing work has begun this becomes only relevant for reference.

Goals

Original goal was to produce the annotated skate map of the Netherlands using real-time GIS data acquisition during skating through GPS combined with mobile phones. During acquisition the data can be enriched with ratings (road surface, scenery, POIs) and media.

Why

Where to skate, road surface quality and scenery are the most important aspects for (long) distance skaters. There are many places on both the internet and in books that describe skate routes. See Links. These are mostly local (regional) initiatives. What is lacking is the skate-equivalent of the "landelijke fietskaart", i.e. an interconnected network for the Netherlands of "skatable" roads.

Steps

  1. acquisition of GIS data geared at skating
    1. real-time capture using GPS + mobile phone
  2. GIS data enrichment
    1. road surface rating
    2. scenery rating
    3. points of interest (horeca, views, other)
    4. annotation: photos, video, audio, text
  3. create services for skaters using the enriched GIS data
    1. layered navigational maps
    2. routes
    3. competition/gaming elements

Users

Target users are distance skaters.

  1. producers
  2. consumers

Game Elements

Embed competition game elements for producers

  • rankings
    • largest total distance
    • highest (average) speed
    • best average road surface
    • nicest average scenery
  • zone capture

Divide the map in small rectangular zones. Those who have skated the largest distance in a zone, become zone-owner. Have ranking on most zones captured.
